The Egyptian Cabinet's Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) Tuesday said Egypt ranked 22nd among 63 countries in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2024, recording 61.8 points.

Egypt came second in the Middle East and North Africa, following Morocco, the IDSC added.

The index, issued by the German Watch corporation, highlighted measures adopted by Egypt to expand investments in renewable energy projects, including encouraging reliance on solar and wind energies.

According to the index, Egypt has also promoted larger investments in fossil fuels, particularly fossil gas.

Denmark achieved the best ranking in the index, although no country performed well enough to achieve the overall “very high” ranking. Therefore, the first three ranks in the overall ranking remain empty.

Denmark was followed by Estonia in fifth place and the Philippines in sixth place, according to the website of the climate index.

Real adjustments were only made in emissions reduction targets in the power sector, where Egypt wants to reduce 65 percent of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from oil and gas, 33 percent in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, and seven percent in the transport sector, all compared with baseline 2030 levels.

Published annually since 2005, the CCPI is an independent monitoring tool that tracks the climate protection performance of 63 countries and the EU. It aims to enhance transparency in international climate politics and enables comparison of climate protection efforts and progress made by individual countries.
