Egypt produces 4.7 TWh of clean power in Q1 2022

Renewable energy plants, including wind, photovoltaic (PV) and hydropower stations, across Egypt produced a total of 4,735 GWh of electricity in the first quarter of 2022, according to data published by the country's New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA).

More than half of the total generation, or 2,654 GWh, came from hydropower while wind parks produced 1,132 GWh. About 949 GWh came from solar PV systems, NREA said in its quarterly report.

The production levels are similar to those in the first quarter of 2021 when wind, PV and hydropower plants added a total of 4,789 GWh to Egypt's electricity mix.

Last year, solar power plants in the North African country generated 4,500 GWh and wind turbines produced 5,400 GWh of green electricity. A further 14,000 GWh came from hydropower plants.

In 2022, Egypt expects to connect between 300 MW and 400 MW of new renewable energy capacity to the national power grid, as NREA's executive chairman Mohammed El Khayat told daily Addustour in March.
