Egypt records 8.7 percent increase in industrial production in Q1 2020 - CAPMAS

Petroleum coke contributed to the highest percentage of total industrial production in Egypt during the first quarter (Q1) of 2020, reaching 28.6%, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).


This was followed by crude oil and natural gas extraction, which accounted for 20.0% of the industrial production value (excluding refined petroleum).  


Meanwhile, the manufacture of food products accounted for 11.0% of the country’s industrial production value.


Total industrial production value (excluding refined petroleum) increased 8.7% to EGP 183.1bn during Q1 of 2020, compared to EGP 168.4bn during the same quarter of 2019.


The food production value increased to EGP 39.2bn for Q1 of 2020, compared to EGP 38.2bn in Q4 of 2019, reflecting an increase of 2.4%.


Meanwhile, iron and steel industry manufacturing increased to EGP 30.4bn for Q1 of 2020, compared to EGP 28.6bn for Q4 of 2019, an increase of 6.4%. Meanwhile, it reached EGP 26.6bn in Q3 of 2019, due to the winter season and the reduction in supply contracts.                    


The beverage production reached EGP 7.8bn for Q1 of 2020 compared to EGP 5.9bn for Q1 of 2019, reflecting an increase of 30.8%. This compared also to the EGP 5.6bn this sector reached for Q3 of 2019, an increase of 38.2% due to natural increase in seasonal production.
