COP28: Egypt to develop domestic regulation to curb methane emissions

Published on : 2023-12-05

Egypt is set to develop a “detailed roadmap” to reduce methane emissions, the country’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El-Molla said at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai.

The roadmap is part of an agreement to be inked during the COP28 summit. It will be supported technically by The US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), El-Molla added on Monday.

Egypt seeks to curb the repercussions of climate change and adapt to its effects by joining international efforts to reduce methane emissions.

El-Molla said reducing methane emissions is essential for the country’s carbon reduction strategy.

As part of its National Climate Change Strategy 2050, Egypt is making headway with its plans to reduce carbon emissions and further rely on renewable and alternative energy sources, including using natural gas as a low-carbon transition fuel.
The country ambitiously seeks to become a regional green energy hub. Therefore, it signed several MoUs with international corporations for investment in green hydrogen.

Despite producing only 0.6 percent of the world’s emissions, Egypt is one of the countries most affected by the adverse impact of climate change on its coastlines, agriculture, water resources, health, population, and infrastructure.

Egypt’s Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad said during a COP28 session on Saturday that developing countries need $160 billion annually for climate change adaptation.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) kicked off on 30 November in Dubai and concludes on 12 December.
