Egypt increases gas, LNG exports to Jordan

Published on : 2023-06-11

Egypt’s gas exports to Jordan are set to increase, with the signing of two new agreements on Saturday 10/06/2023 that facilitate LNG storage and regasification, and increase gas supply to Jordan’s industrial sector, according to official statements from the two countries.

Under the first agreement, Egypt will use a Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU) at the Al-Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah Terminal in Aqaba, Jordan through 2025, a statement from Jordan’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources said on Saturday.

The agreement was signed by Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) and Jordan’s National Electric Power company (NEPCO).

Amjad Al-Rawashdeh, director general of NEPCO, explained that Egypt will supply Jordan with LNG and a separate amount of natural gas that can re-pumped to Egypt if needed through pipelines.

The agreement aims to reduce the operational costs of LNG storage and regasification, and to secure gas supplies for both countries, according to a statement from Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.

While under the second agreement, Egypt will supply the Jordanian industrial sector with natural gas.

The second agreement was signed by EGAS and the Jordanian-Egyptian Fajr Company.

Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum Tarek El-Molla said on Saturday that the new agreements embody the strength of cooperation and integration existing between the two countries in natural gas sector.

In January, Egypt and Jordan signed an agreement to supply natural gas to the industrial city of Quweira in Aqaba, Jordan.
