Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El Molla and Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad have inaugurated the trial operation of a smart wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for the Al Amal Petroleum company site.

This plant is the first of its kind in efficiency in Egypt and the Middle East which will serve the petroleum production process and ensure environmental safety as one of the COP27 commitments. 

During the opening, El Molla affirmed of the petroleum industry keenness to achieve environmental compatibility in its projects by using the available modern techniques to achieve the best results.

He added that the petroleum industry is making progress in two parallel pillars, including a short-term plan for modernizing efforts and capabilities and the long-term plan for implementing new integrated projects which can achieve environmental goals and sustainability.

The two ministers confirmed that this plant is one of the fruitful cooperation between the two entities to limit the pollution in the Gulf of Suez zone noting that the design capacity of the plant is 1,000 cubic meters per day, and it uses the latest technologies in the advanced tertiary treatment (physical, chemical, and biological) in addition to water filtration. They added that the cost of the plant is $8 million.

Fouad said that currently, 80% of the petroleum companies are carrying out environmental sanitation plans at different rates based upon the environmental compatibility strategy initiated by the President and adopted by the two ministries.
