Germany, Egypt sign LNG and renewable hydrogen partnership

Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Change (BMWK) announced that Egypt and Germany have signed agreements on letters of Intent to bolster cooperation in the development of climate neutral energy supplies.

BMWK on its website on Friday said Germany is supporting Egypt in establishing sustainably valued green hydrogen series and the signing was carried out virtually via video conference with the participation of German Economy and Climate Action Minister Robert Habeck and State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development Jochen Flasbarth.

Egyptian Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Petroleum Tarek El Molla, Minister of International Cooperation Rania El Mashat signed for the Egyptian side in the presence of Egypt's Ambassador in Berlin Khaled Galal.

The agreements aim at intensifying cooperation with Germany in the field of green hydrogen production and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as part of the two countries' endeavors to mitigate the impact of climate change and upgrade the safe energy supplies with low prices along with reducing the carbon emissions in compliance with the objectives of Paris Climate Agreement.

Habeck asserted that partnership in the field of energy sends a strong message ahead of the start of the UN climate change conference, COP27, which is due to kick off in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, on Sunday.

He said the German-Egyptian cooperation would bolster the world energy transition and building of cross-border energy grids that are climate neutral depending on the green hydrogen technologies.

Meanwhile, Flasbarth said the world is now heading to new energy systems and emerging and developing countries should be involved from the beginning.
