Sustainability surge: PetroSafe’s strategy to curb emissions
Published on : 2024-01-17
In an announcement posted on Facebook, the Petroleum Safety and Environmental Services Company (PetroSafe) revealed its plans to conduct a study aimed at reducing carbon emissions at the Petroleum Pipeline Company (PPC)’s site in Mostorod, Egypt.
This initiative is a part of the petroleum sector’s strategy to enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions across the industry, in line with global efforts to mitigate climate change and its impacts on the environment and economy.
The Mostorod site, located in the Qalyubia Governorate near Cairo, is a significant hub in Egypt’s petroleum industry. It houses the ERC Mostorod Refinery, which was officially inaugurated in September 2020 and is one of the largest refineries in Egypt. The refinery, owned by the Egyptian Refining Company (ERC), boasts a processing capacity of 4.7 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa). This facility represents a substantial investment in the region, amounting to approximately $4.3 billion. Its primary function is to convert low-value petroleum products from the nearby Cairo Oil Refining Company’s (CORC) facility into medium and light distillates, thereby playing a crucial role in the import substitution of petroleum products in Egypt.
The Mostorod refinery complex, including the ERC and Citadel refineries, is an integral part of Egypt’s plan to increase its oil processing capacity and diversify its production to include lighter products, petrochemicals, and higher-octane gasoline. The Citadel refinery, in particular, contributes significantly to this goal, with a capacity of processing 100,000 barrels per day (bpd) of refined products. The site’s development reflects the Egyptian government’s larger vision to expand and upgrade its existing petroleum facilities and establish new refineries and petrochemical plants, enhancing the nation’s self-sufficiency in these critical resources.
PetroSafe’s study at the PPC’s site in Mostorod demonstrates the increasing focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility in the petroleum sector.
