Wintershall Dea Growth by The Nile

Published on : 2021-02-27

The Mediterranean is an interesting region and Egypt is well positioned to serve as an Energy Hub.

As Africa’s second largest gas producer the country makes a major contribution to domestic and North African energy supply.

Egypt can be subdivided into three main hydrocarbon producing regions: the Gulf of Suez, the Nile Delta (onshore and offshore) and the Western Desert. A new frontier area for exploration is the Red Sea.

Wintershall Dea has been active in Egypt for 45 years. Since the production start from the Zeit Bay field in the early 1980s, Wintershall Dea has produced more than 650 million barrels of crude oil in the Gulf of Suez.

Today, the company has stakes in onshore and offshore concessions in the Gulf of Suez and the Nile Delta.

Wintershall Dea is continuously investing in all Egyptian assets in order to further boost its gas and oil production.

Reliable and efficient production

After country entry the company celebrated first oil in the Gulf of Suez eight years later.

Today, Ras Budran and Zeit Bay are among the oldest producing fields in Egypt.

Production is operated by the Suez Oil Company (SUCO), Wintershall Dea‘s joint venture with the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC).

Recent technical workovers on onshore and offshore facilities in the Gulf of Suez have led to a significant production increase.

The onshore gas project Disouq is a gas field, currently with 19 producing wells, operated by the sole shareholder Disouco. The first production phase started in 2013.

In November 2018, Wintershall Dea announced first gas from Disouq Phase B and the completion of two additional wells.

Wintershall Dea also holds a 17.25 per cent partner share in the West Nile Delta project, one of the most important Egyptian energy projects of recent years.

The project, operated by BP, involves the development of gas and condensate fields located within the North Alexandria and West Mediterranean Deepwater concessions off the coast of Alexandria.

First gas from West Nile Delta was produced in 2017 from the Taurus and Libra fields. In February 2019, two additional gas fields, Giza and Fayoum, started production. The fifth field Raven is currently in its commissioning.

Long-term commitment and close partnership

In early 2019, Wintershall Dea was awarded the East Damanhour exploration block that is located to the west of the Disouq development leases in the onshore Nile Delta.

In 2021 the company will begin a drilling campaign involving several wells.

Wintershall Dea has always attached great importance to excellent cooperation with all of its stakeholders from politics, industry and local communities.

As a major IOC in Egypt, the company takes its corporate and social responsibilities very seriously. Wintershall Dea is committed to supporting people in the areas around production sites by conducting carefully selected social projects.
